UPPER WEST SIDE
The Upper West Side is an upscale, primarily residential area that lies between Central Park and the Hudson River.
The neighborhood has long been regarded as a fulcrum of New York City’s cultural and intellectual elite, having been home to icons like John Lennon, Lauren Bacall, and Leonard Bernstein. And while it continues to act as a hub for many artists and the urbane, it has over time become a coveted locale for those of all professions and lifestyles.
A paradigm of its city, the Upper West Side possesses an incredibly diverse range of world-class restaurants and eateries. At the southern end of the neighborhood lie a trio of restaurants—Per Se, Masa, and Jean Georges—that earned 3 Michelin Stars in 2017 when only 6 in the entire city were rated as such. Trendy spot, Redfarm, and industrial tavern, Tessa, sit between 76th and 77th, and Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue are lined with a multitude of restaurants of all cuisines and price points. Finally, though not technically part of the neighborhood, the legendary Tavern On the Green is tucked just inside the 65th and 67th Street entrances of Central Park.
There are swanky bars and intimate clubs aplenty in the Upper West Side, especially along Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. E’s and Maison Pickle are great places for groups, and Prohibition and the Manhattan Cricket Club have distinctive atmospheres and cocktails to match. The neighborhood isn’t short on classic pubs either. The Parlour and George Keeley’s are both popular spots.
Beginning with the Time Warner Center on 59th Street and extending through the heart of the neighborhood along Broadway, the Upper West Side is home to a number of high-end retail shops covering clothing, art, electronics, furniture, antiques and more. An eclectic mix of smaller boutiques and independent stores can also be found along Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues.
Whether it’s a freshly pressed juice on the go or a cappuccino to sip and savor, the Upper West Side has options on nearly every block.

Clustered mostly along Broadway, the Upper West Side is home to dozens of theaters that cater to a number of artistic genres. The Beacon Theatre regularly hosts some of the most prominent names in music and comedy, while places like Dizzy’s and Smoke Jazz & Supper Club is where one would go for world-class jazz. Of course, everything relating to music/entertainment is anchored around the iconic Lincoln Center, which contains the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. For movie and film buffs, the Film Society at Lincoln Center organizes the New York Film Festival annually and AMC Loews Lincoln Square boasts the only true IMAX in the entire city.
When it comes to gyms, all the usual suspects—Equinox, Flywheel, SoulCycle—and more can be found. But what distinguishes the Upper West Side from other neighborhoods are the two lush parks that flank it. Riverside Park runs along the Hudson River and features running trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, and baseball and soccer fields, while Central Park offers all that and so much more.
